DA' HELL HAPPENED #62: WWE Money in the Bank
Hello wrestling fans, and welcome to another edition of the "Da' Hell Happened" featuring the review of last night's Money in the Bank PPV, if you can call that a PPV. I still can't find words to describe some of the things we witnessed Sunday night. I'm just glad we had a main event like that, which literally saved the damn PPV. So let's see what happened, if I can sort words to describe it!
RESULTS:
Carmella won the Money in the Bank Ladder match (2.75*)
The New Day def. The Usos (C) via count-out (3.5*)
Naomi (C) def. Lana to retain the SmackDown Women's Championship (2.5*)
Mike & Maria Kanellis arrive in WWE
Jinder Mahal (C) def. Randy Orton to retain the WWE Championship (4*)
Breezango def. The Ascension (2*)
Baron Corbin won the Money in the Bank Ladder match (5*)
MATCH OF THE NIGHT (Honorable Mention): WWE Champion Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton
It's true that the PPV was very unsatisfying for a lot of fans, and many seem to name it the "worst PPV of the year", but let's not count everything out: the WWE Championship match was one I was invested in. Aside from the fact it is a tradition that the champion comes out first and that didn't happen here, it was a match that played with the crowd, didn't leave anything behind like the fact legends were at ringside watching the match. It was quite the match, in my opinion.
MATCH OF THE NIGHT: Male's Money in the Bank Ladder match
Oh my god. What a match. So, to briefly describe what happened in this match, Shinsuke Nakamura was attacked from behind before the match even began, setting up a MITB match with only 5 superstars. Sami Zayn was on fire most of the time, attacking everyone with everything, even a freakin' "Sunset Flip" from the top of the ladder to Dolph Ziggler. Styles was on a roll as well, hitting Owens with a AA on a ladder. When everyone thought Baron Corbin was going to retrieve the briefcase, Nakamura came back and was on fire, "killing" everyone in his path, except one: AJ Styles. Both superstars had a face-off and a quick fight before setting up a ladder and fighting on top of it. Corbin came back and shoved both off of the ladder, then climbed up and won the Money in the Bank briefcase
Basically, we had a glimpse of a dream match that is definitely set up for the future between Nakamura and Styles, and a fresh face ready to strike and become WWE Champion. Imagine the pop Corbin wouldn't have if John Cena would come back, defeat Mahal and have the "Lone Wolf" cash in the MITB briefcase on him? I am all-in for Corbin, well-deserved.
MVP OF THE NIGHT (Honorable Mentions):
Jinder Mahal: Twice in a row on a PPV, Jinder Mahal defeated one of the greatest of all time in Randy Orton, setting up his dominance in the blue brand. Who would of thought this would happen 2 months ago?
Shinsuke Nakamura: When Nakamura came back to the ring, I was constantly saying "this is the Nakamura I've been waiting to see". Fired up, striking everything and everyone on his path. That is the "King of Strong Style", and that is how people should portray him. He kicks hard, and leaves people laying on the ground.
MVP OF THE NIGHT: Baron Corbin
With the victory in the Money in the Bank Ladder match, not only can Baron Corbin call himself "Mr. Money in the Bank", but he can also say he is a almost guaranteed future WWE Champion. A young man that came to SmackDown LIVE and took the blue brand by storm only had this left to do to make him a credible top superstar: go after the WWE Championship.
DA' HELL HAPPENED MOMENT OF THE SHOW: The Women's division is shot
A night that was seen as historic for the Women's division turned out to be an absolute disaster in every way possible. First, a man retrieves the women's briefcase. Secondly, the match ends in an absolute chaos, leaving people confused and 3 referees discussing whether that decision should be definite or not (where the hell was Shane McMahon or Daniel Bryan?). Thirdly, the distraction Carmella made in the SmackDown Women's title match added nothing to the mix (FOR GOD SAKES, NAOMI IS THE BABYFACE, LANA IS THE HEEL; IT'S CLASSIC WRESTLING BOOKING!). Also the Women's MITB match was really fast and should've gone longer. Utterly chaos and confusion that left fans with more questions than answers. I hope they make a better work on Tuesday, for the sake of these amazing athletes this division has.
And with this I finish this week's first Da' Hell Happened. Tomorrow I will be back for the review of RAW, and Wednesday with the review of SmackDown LIVE. See you there!

Don't be fooled by this photo: Carmella didn't retrieve the briefcase, James Ellsworth did. The funny part? This was supposed to be a historic WOMEN's MITB match. BS. |
